Aliens Exist, Apparently – former NASA Astronaut says gov’t covering up

Reading one of my favorite pop-culture news sites, io9, I came across a story that “interesting” is not a strong enough adjective to describe.

On Tuesday of this week, former astronaut Dr. Edgar Mitchell appeared on a British radio station called Kerrang!. While talking with host Nick Margerriso, Dr. Mitchell loot loose something of a bombshell.

I happen to be privledged enough to be in on the fact that we have been visited on this planet, and the UFO phenomenon is real, although it’s been covered up our governments for quite a long time.

To sum up just what we’ve got so far: Dr. Edgar Mitchell – a veteran of the United States Navy, holder of a doctorate in Aeronautics and Astronautics from MIT and pilot for the Apollo 14 mission – has said publically, on record, that the United States government, at the least, has had contact with intelligent extraterrestrial life and has been hiding this fact from the general public.

So.

The reason this is big is not necessarily what is being said (though it does get even heavier, we’ll get to that), but rather who is saying it. The typical picture of a ufology studier or supporter is one of wide-eyed eccentrics and failed scientists. Dr. Mitchell is neither; a sober and respectable man both in the military and scientific traditions of the U.S., it’s hard to imagine him bandying about such claims lightly.

I feel it is, however, prudent to point out that Dr. Mitchell is a co-founder of the Institute of Noetic Sciences, an organization which purports to study “human possibility by investigating aspects of reality—mind, consciousness, and spirit.” This may affect some people’s opinions on what Dr. Mitchell has to say. Given that the man does have success as a mainstream scientist and his history with the United States government I am at least willing to listen.

Now, this isn’t the first time that Dr. Mitchell has made these claims, that he has seen and heard discussion of high-level documents confirming alien existence/contact. This is, however, the first time that I can tell they have made a mainstream news source. Furthermore, this is the first time that I can tell that he has made the claim that there is a “ramping up” to full disclosure by various world governments:

“I don’t know whether it will be this year in the United States, but we’ve already had it in the last few years from the Belgian government, the French government, the Brazillian government, the Mexican government, they’ve opened their files.”

Dr. Mitchell and Mr. Margerriso go on to discuss a rumor that supposedly over the next four years the British government is going to release classified files on UFO phenomona, leading up to an official confirmation of extraterrestrial existence and contact.

This is all…pretty weird stuff. Pretty weird and pretty heavy. I am going to be spending the next few days seeing if I can’t track down copies of these supposed documents and confirmation of this rumor about Britain’s actions. In the meantime, I’d like to inform everyone that the show Larry King Live will be having Dr. Edgar Mitchell as a guest on the first weekend of August (the 1st-2nd), and he will be discussing this issue. I would encourage any interested to watch.
